Kate Koval, a former player for the LSU women’s basketball team, has confirmed her decision to leave the program, citing the signing of Russian player Anna Minaeva as a key factor. Koval, who hails from Ukraine, announced her departure on social media, revealing that she learned about Minaeva's signing shortly after the transfer portal closed.
In her Instagram post, Koval expressed her concerns about whether LSU was still the right fit for her following the announcement of Minaeva’s recruitment. She stated that she found out about the signing of the 17-year-old Russian professional on April 23, just days after the transfer portal had closed, which prompted her to reconsider her future with the team. Koval officially withdrew from LSU just before the start of classes, as reported by Front Office Sports.
Koval is hopeful that the NCAA will take her situation into consideration, allowing her to play elsewhere during the upcoming 2026–27 season. The NCAA has strict rules regarding midyear transfers, which typically prohibit players who were enrolled at another institution during the first semester from participating in games.
