This month, the skies above Salina, Kansas, will once again come alive with the thrilling maneuvers of some of the nation’s top pilots as the U.S. National Aerobatic Championships return to the Salina Regional Airport. Scheduled from September 20 to 25, this prestigious event has been a staple in the region since its inception in 2019, drawing competitors and spectators alike.
The championships will feature competition across eight categories, encompassing both powered aircraft and gliders, with over 100 pilots expected to showcase their skills this year. The event promises to be a spectacle of precision flying and artistry, as competitors perform intricate aerial maneuvers designed to impress judges and audiences.
Leading up to the official competition start, unofficial practice sessions will kick off on September 16, allowing pilots to prepare and fine-tune their routines. Official practice will begin on September 18, giving participants additional time to acclimate to the skies over Salina. The official contest flights are set to commence at noon on September 20, with the skies above the airport filled with aircraft performing throughout the day, weather permitting.
One of the highlights of the competition will be the four-minute freestyle flights, which are scheduled to take place starting at 3 p.m. on September 25. These performances often include creative elements such as smoke trails and music, providing a unique experience for spectators and showcasing the exceptional skills of the pilots.
In terms of competition categories, the powered aircraft section will award U.S. championships across five levels: Primary, Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced, and National or Unlimited. For gliders, three champions will be crowned in the Primary, Sportsman, and Intermediate categories. Notably, the Advanced and Unlimited glider championships were previously held in Arizona, but there will also be a regional contest known as the Salina Glider Classic, running concurrently with the U.S. Nationals.
For those interested in attending, while no official public viewing area has been designated, Fossett Plaza is a popular spot for aircraft spotting and can be accessed from Beechcraft Road off Centennial Road. Given that many of the maneuvers will take place high above the ground, spectators are encouraged to bring binoculars to enhance their viewing experience.
