LAHINCH, Ireland – The U.S. Walker Cup team is facing some health challenges as multiple players are dealing with stomach issues just days before the start of the 51st edition of the tournament at Lahinch Golf Club. Notably, William Jennings, a rising junior from Alabama, and Ethan Fang, a senior at Oklahoma State who participated in last year's Walker Cup at Cypress Point, missed Thursday morning's practice session to recover from these ailments.
U.S. captain Nathan Smith provided an update on the situation, assuring that both players are expected to recover quickly. "They’re good," Smith stated. "They’re just going to get a little rest and should be good to go." This reassurance comes after a similar incident in 2021, when 16 competitors from both the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) experienced stomach bugs during the event at Seminole Golf Club, leading to some players requiring emergency medical attention.
The 2021 Walker Cup was particularly challenging, as the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the presence of alternates for both teams. American Mac Meissner and GB&I's Jake Bolton were called into action due to the health issues affecting the main roster. This marked a historic moment, as it was the first time in the tournament's long history, dating back to 1922, that alternates were utilized.
Despite the current health concerns, Smith remains optimistic that the situation will not escalate to the level seen two years ago. He has prepared a list of four alternates who could step in if necessary, although none are currently on-site at Lahinch. Importantly, the only session that requires all ten players is the singles matches scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
"You know, travel and everything hits everyone a little differently," Smith noted. "But they’re going to be OK." Meanwhile, the GB&I team is returning to full health, with Englishman Tyler Weaver, a senior at Florida State, having overcome an oblique injury that sidelined him since the ACC Championship in April. Weaver withdrew from the U.S. Amateur last month to ensure he was fully fit for his second Walker Cup appearance.
Weaver played a crucial role in last year's competition, facing Jackson Koivun in all four sessions, where he recorded a 1-3 match record. GB&I captain Dean Robertson has reported that Weaver is now "full go" and performing well in practice, even showcasing his skills with a hurling stick during a visit from the Clare County hurling team earlier this week. As the Walker Cup approaches, both teams are eager to put their best foot forward amidst the health challenges they face.
