The Washington Commanders have faced a challenging training camp, marked by a series of injuries that have affected key players. Among the most notable injuries was Laremy Tunsil’s torn triceps, which has drawn significant attention. Additionally, former second-round pick Johnny Newton suffered a torn pectoral muscle, while quarterback Marcus Mariota and center Nick Allegretti dealt with various nagging injuries.
One injury that did not receive much media coverage was that of linebacker and defensive end Drake Jackson. On August 25, the Commanders placed Jackson on the reserve/injured list, and just over a week later, the NFL’s transaction wire confirmed that the team had released him with an injury settlement.
This raises the question: could this be the end of the line for the 25-year-old Jackson, who was once a promising talent drafted by the San Francisco 49ers?
Jackson entered the NFL with high expectations after being selected in the second round of the 2022 draft. During his rookie season with the 49ers, he played in 15 games and recorded three sacks, showcasing his potential as a valuable edge rusher. However, his career took a downturn in 2023 when he was placed on injured reserve in November after appearing in just eight games. His struggles continued into 2024 when he suffered a torn patellar tendon during training camp, sidelining him for the entire season. Following his injury, the 49ers waived him in May 2025.
Given the circumstances, the Commanders appeared to be a fitting destination for Jackson, who was in need of help at the edge rusher position. Adam Peters, the team's general manager, had previously served as the assistant GM for the 49ers when Jackson was drafted, allowing him to keep a close eye on Jackson's development. On October 15, the Commanders signed him, and he was placed on IR with a designation for return. He made his return to the field on December 4, participating in three games and recording three tackles.
In the offseason, the Commanders recognized the need to bolster their edge rusher position, which they addressed by signing players like Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson, as well as selecting Joshua Josephs in the fifth round of the draft. Despite these additions, Peters re-signed Jackson to a one-year deal, providing him with another opportunity to secure a roster spot.
However, Jackson's summer with the Commanders was relatively quiet compared to his peers at the position, and now, following his release, he is free to seek another opportunity with a different team. As he navigates this uncertain phase of his career, it remains to be seen where Jackson will land next.
