PORT-OF-SPAIN: The West Indies are poised to secure a series sweep against Pakistan as the two teams prepare to clash in the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday. Following a commanding victory in the first Test, the home side is eager to establish themselves as a dominant force in their own conditions.
Captain Roston Chase expressed his determination to build on the team’s recent successes, particularly after a disappointing previous year where they won only one out of nine Tests. "After having the year we had last year, we sat down with the plan and said this is where we want to be," Chase stated. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and executing their game plan effectively in the upcoming match.
The West Indies secured a 90-run victory over Pakistan in the series opener held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba. This win not only boosted their confidence but also added crucial points to their tally in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings, where they currently sit eighth, just above Pakistan.
Chase highlighted the significance of making their home ground a fortress, stating, "We want to make home our fortress, where we make it very difficult for teams to come to the Caribbean and beat us." The West Indies have shown strong form at home, and they aim to continue this trend against a struggling Pakistani side.
In the first Test, the West Indies showcased a remarkable bowling performance led by Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales. Chase, however, was unable to contribute with the ball due to a right index finger injury, but he remains optimistic about his recovery. "It’s getting better. Hopefully, I think I’ll be ready to bowl by Sunday," he said, indicating that he had started bowling in the nets.
On the flip side, Pakistan is grappling with a series of challenges. The team recently suffered a 2-0 defeat in a Test series against Bangladesh, leaving them at the bottom of the WTC standings. They face a daunting task in Port-of-Spain as they seek to avoid another series loss. A significant blow to their batting lineup came when Shan Masood, who scored a century in the first Test, was ruled out of the second match due to a fractured finger sustained while batting.
Despite a commendable performance from their bowlers in the first Test, which saw them restrict the West Indies to 311 and 181, Pakistan’s batting remains a major concern. Chasing a target of 211 runs, the team collapsed to just 120 all out, with only captain Babar Azam managing to make a significant contribution with 58 not out. Key middle-order players, including Salman Ali Agha and wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan, will need to step up if Pakistan hopes to mount a challenge against the West Indies.
As the second Test approaches, both teams will be looking to make their mark, with the West Indies aiming for a clean sweep and Pakistan desperate for a turnaround in their fortunes.
