What to know about Tony Romo's citations, statement and what's next

Tony Romo has multiple new citations connected to his July 23 drunk driving arrest.  

Romo, a CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, was stopped by police while driving on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee. The Burlington native was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

He performed poorly on a field sobriety test, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. He told police he played in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf event in West Bend and that he was on his way to a relative's house after the event.

Here's what we know about the case:

What was Tony Romo's blood alcohol content?  

Romo refused to submit to an intoxication test. He was cited for that refusal July 27.  

How many citations does Tony Romo have?  

Romo has four citations:

• Refusing to take an intoxication test  
• First-offense operating while intoxicated  
• Unsafe passing on the right side  
• Possessing open intoxicants  

Will Tony Romo go to jail?  

Romo does not face jail time under his current citations because a first-offense OWI in Wisconsin is generally handled as a civil offense. He's due in court Sept. 21.

What has Tony Romo said?  

A Romo spokesperson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other news organizations Aug. 27: “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved. We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.” 

Will Tony Romo call any football games on CBS this season?  

Romo was placed on leave by CBS. J.J. Watt, a Pewaukee native and former University of Wisconsin and NFL star, is taking Romo's place on CBS' lead broadcast team.  

"Haven't said much because it's not the circumstances you'd hope it would happen under, but I'm incredibly excited about this opportunity," Watt wrote on X on Aug. 11.
