Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has returned to West Ham United in a new role after being appointed as an official Club Ambassador.
The former Hammers captain spent four-and-a-half years in East London after joining West Ham in January 2021. During her time with the club, the Iceland international became an important figure both on and off the pitch, while also fulfilling a lifelong dream of representing the club she supported growing up.
Now, following her departure as a player in 2025, Brynjarsdóttir will continue her relationship with West Ham in an ambassadorial role.
A special connection with West HamBrynjarsdóttir arrived at West Ham in January 2021 and quickly established herself as an important part of the women’s team.
The midfielder went on to make 87 appearances for the Hammers, including 68 in the Women’s Super League. That record made her the club’s fifth-highest appearance maker in WSL history at the time of the club’s 2025 advent calendar feature.
Her leadership qualities were also recognised when she was named West Ham captain for the 2022/23 season.
Brynjarsdóttir took over the armband from Gilly Flaherty and became the second captain in the club’s professional women’s history. She also won the Hammer of the Year award in 2023, highlighting her importance to the team.
A memorable spell in Claret and BlueThroughout her time at West Ham, Brynjarsdóttir became a popular figure among supporters.
Her journey with the club also included a period away from the pitch after she announced in August 2023 that she was expecting her second child. As a result, she missed the entire 2023/24 season.
However, the midfielder eventually returned to competitive action.
Her comeback added another important chapter to her West Ham story. In December 2024, she scored against Southampton in the Women’s League Cup, marking her first goal for the club since returning from maternity leave.
Brynjarsdóttir ultimately brought her playing career with the Hammers to an end in 2025 after four-and-a-half years in East London.
Returning as a Club AmbassadorAlthough her playing career at West Ham has ended, Brynjarsdóttir’s connection with the club will now continue.
As an official Club Ambassador, she will represent West Ham and help maintain the strong relationship she has built with supporters during her time in claret and blue.
Her experience as a former player and captain also means she can offer a unique perspective on the women’s team and the wider growth of the club.
The appointment gives Brynjarsdóttir an opportunity to remain involved with the Hammers while using the experience she gained during her playing career to support the next generation.
A new chapterBrynjarsdóttir’s return represents a fitting continuation of a remarkable West Ham story.
From joining the club in 2021 to becoming captain, winning Hammer of the Year and making 87 appearances, she became one of the most recognisable figures in the history of the West Ham Women’s team.
Her journey has also been particularly significant because of her personal connection to the club. Brynjarsdóttir grew up supporting West Ham, making her time as a player in East London something she had dreamed of from a young age.
Now, rather than saying goodbye, West Ham supporters will continue to see a familiar face around the club.
Brynjarsdóttir’s appointment as a Club Ambassador ensures that one of the Hammers’ most influential former players remains part of the club’s story, with a new role helping to represent West Ham and its values both on and off the pitch.
