Yan Diomande, the latest signing for Real Madrid and a new athlete for Red Bull, recently shared insights into his remarkable journey from the streets of Abidjan to the prestigious Santiago Bernabeu. In an introductory interview, the 19-year-old winger discussed the sacrifices that have shaped his path to professional football.
Diomande made headlines as he became the most expensive player in Real Madrid's history, transferring from RB Leipzig in a deal valued at €140 million, which includes performance-related add-ons. His move comes after a standout season in the Bundesliga, where he showcased his talents following his transfer from Leganes.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Diomande noted that his early experiences in Abidjan instilled a deep passion for football. He recounted, "Growing up in Abidjan meant that football was everything. We played on any surface we could find, without proper boots or a proper pitch, simply because we loved football." This love for the game has remained a driving force in his career, as he stated, "That hunger and that joy have never abandoned me. They are still the foundation of how I play today."
His dream of becoming a professional footballer took a significant turn when he moved to the United States at the age of 15, despite not speaking English. It was during his time at DME Academy in Florida that he began to see a pathway to a professional career. "It was always the dream, but it started to feel real when I was at DME Academy and European scouts began taking notice of me," Diomande explained. He highlighted the challenges of adapting to a new environment, saying, "It was difficult at first. I couldn’t communicate with anyone and everything was different. But football was my language, and my teammates helped me find my place both on and off the pitch."
Diomande's breakthrough came during his time at RB Leipzig, where he achieved significant milestones in his development. He proudly recalled winning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, describing it as proof that the sacrifices made by his family were worthwhile. He stated, "It was proof that all the sacrifices my family and I had made were worth it." He also credited his time in Germany for preparing him for the intense demands at Real Madrid, noting, "Leipzig taught me how to compete at the highest level week after week, and the coaching staff demanded that I improve every detail of my game. That season gave me the confidence and mentality I’ll need at Real Madrid."
Now, as he embarks on this new chapter with Real Madrid, Diomande expressed his excitement about fulfilling a childhood dream. He remarked, "It’s fulfilling a childhood dream. It’s everything I’ve worked for," and he is eager to contribute to the club's success. Settling in at Valdebebas, he has already been impressed by the quality of his teammates, particularly noting the skills of Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe. "It’s incredible. In every training session, the standard is so high that you have no choice but to raise your own level," he shared. Diomande is determined to absorb as much knowledge as possible from his new surroundings as he continues on his journey in professional football.
