In a recent interview, Zafar Ibn-e-Yaqoob, a former national shot put record holder in Pakistan, has emphasized the importance of European training for Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem. Zafar believes that for Nadeem to uphold his elite status in the javelin throw, training alongside the world's top athletes is crucial.

"Unless he trains with the world’s leading athletes, he will not be able to sustain his top position in the javelin world," Zafar stated from Lahore, highlighting the competitive nature of the sport. He specifically pointed out Germany as an ideal training base for Nadeem, who achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a record throw of 92.97 meters.

Zafar’s comments come in the wake of Nadeem's disappointing performance at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, where he finished ninth and failed to qualify for the top eight. This was a significant drop from his previous performance in Birmingham in 2022, where he set a Games record with a throw of 90.18 meters. The criticism surrounding his Glasgow performance has raised concerns about his ability to maintain his status among the elite in javelin.

In addition to urging Nadeem to relocate his training to Europe, Zafar recommended that Nadeem's coach, Salman Butt, accompany him. He expressed doubts about the effectiveness of training in Pakistan for sustaining Nadeem's position as a leading javelin thrower. Zafar stated, "Salman Butt should also go with Arshad, but I don’t think by staying here he can help him sustain his position as the world’s leading javelin thrower." This underscores the need for a comprehensive support system for the athlete.

Looking ahead, Nadeem has significant competitions on the horizon, including the World Ultimate Athletics Championships in Hungary from September 11-13, followed by the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. These events will be critical for Nadeem as he seeks to regain his top form.

Zafar also pointed out the necessity for a more rigorous strength and conditioning program for Nadeem. He remarked, "I don’t think he has done any proper weight training. It is very important for achieving top performances on the international circuit." This insight reflects the growing emphasis on physical conditioning in modern athletics, especially for field events like javelin.

Despite his recent struggles, Zafar recognizes Nadeem's natural talent, stating, "Arshad is a gifted player, and it is important to put him in a better training environment." With the right training and support, there is hope that Nadeem can return to his previous form and continue to make Pakistan proud on the international stage.
