The Georgia Bulldogs are set to kick off their season on Saturday at Sanford Stadium, but fans and players alike will have to contend with extreme heat. The temperature at the stadium is projected to reach a scorching 97 degrees by the time the game against the Tennessee State Tigers begins at 3 p.m.
In addition to the high temperature, the heat index, which reflects how hot it actually feels, is expected to climb to around 105 degrees. This weather forecast indicates that the game day will be one of the hottest in the history of the Bulldogs' home openers, surpassing the previous record of 96 degrees.
To ensure the safety and comfort of attendees, a heat advisory has been issued for both Friday and Saturday. UGA student Sarah Marchano expressed her concerns, stating, "I think the heat is definitely going to be a challenge. All of us will be taking handheld fans, hydrating before and all throughout the day."
The University of Georgia has implemented several measures to combat the heat. Misting tents and water bottle refill stations will be strategically placed throughout Sanford Stadium to provide relief to fans. Additionally, the university has increased medical staffing and designated overflow areas for cooling and treatment of heat-related illnesses.
Athens-Clarke County Fire Rescue is also preparing to assist with any heat-related emergencies. Capt. Josh Allen, a field supervisor for Athens-Clarke County EMS, noted, "We are staffing a little higher, and the university has increased its first aid staffing, with more water, more ice. They have an overflow cooling station at the Tate Center. They’re also going to have misting fans at Gates 2 and 4. We are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst."
Students attending the game are taking precautions, with many planning to hydrate thoroughly before, during, and after the event. Emma Ridinger, another UGA student, remarked, "Going to show up and cheer on the Dawgs. There’s plenty of health tents that they’re setting up and more water stations, got to go."
Travis Stroud, a lifelong Bulldogs fan, is optimistic about both the weather and the game. He shared his strategy for staying cool, saying, "Try to stay hydrated, drink a lot of water, and Powerade and get ready for the game. This is going to be one of the hottest days that’s ever been. But I feel it’s really an exciting time for everybody, and I’m going to have a good time tomorrow." Fans will also be permitted to bring in one unopened 20-ounce bottle of water, which can be refilled during the game.
